“I discarded more directions on Untitled Black 10 than many other paintings [created] during this same time period. I could not find a balanced path forward in the ethereal story, so, as is indicative of my process, I had to define the space strongly to find my way through. The forms on Untitled Black 10, like all of my works with bold strokes, belong with the overall lighter atmosphere on the canvas and support it with an opposite tension.
These forms float, which allow them to have power as well as lightness and give the painting a feeling of movement and suspension.”
