Art (Gold), Unique

The first time Robert Indiana used the word ART in his printmaking was in May of 1970 when he was asked to create a poster at the Princeton University Art Museum. (The poster was created for an exhibition titled American Art since 1960.)  He would go on to create another poster later that year featuring the word ART for the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) celebrating the inaugural exhibition of its new building.  For two years thereafter, ART occupied Indiana’s attention in paintings, prints, and sculpture.  (Krause, Wilmerding,  The Essential Robert Indiana (2013) at pages 92, 98.) Indiana returned to ART with a number of unique screenprints late in life.
