Geisha

Helen Frankenthaler worked in lithography, etching, and other mediums before eventually settling on woodcut as her medium of choice. Some of her woodcuts would be completed in one sitting, while others would be adapted over a period of years. Frankenthaler spent years perfecting Geisha, a 23-color Ukiyo-e woodcut inspired by Japanese landscapes and the traditional themes of geisha and kabuki. Her complicated woodcuts, especially those using the Ukiyo-e style, like those from the Genji series, are highly regarded in the artist’s oeuvre.
