Robert Longo

Robert Longo (b. 1953) was born and raised in New York, though he studied art and art history in Florence before returning to Buffalo, New York to earn his BFA in 1975.

Longo returned to New York City in 1977, and was thereafter featured in the seminal exhibition Pictures, curated by Douglas Crimp at Artist’s Spaces. This exhibit has later become renowned for identifying those artists linked to the “Pictures Generation” – those interested in the use of “image making” and eschewing Minimalism and Conceptualism in favor of influences from newspaper, mass media, and pop culture.

Works by the artists have been featured at Biennales in New York and Venice; they are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), The Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art (Washington D.C.) and the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), among others.
