Lavett Ballard's Work Featured on TIME Magazine for a Second Time

Artwork by Lavett Ballard has been chosen for the cover of TIME Magazine, now for the second time. According to Victor Williams, TIME Magazine's Art Director: "For a corresponding visual narrative to accompany a new piece by Isabel Wilkerson, author of Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, TIME turned to artist Lavett Ballard, to create a cover that would—like Wilkerson’s work—present a challenge to the reader and to America: How did we arrive at this moment, a moment when the barriers to equality in America are so clear? And what is the way forward?”

Long-Sharp Gallery Adds Warhol Photography

While Long-Sharp Gallery has long been a champion of works by Andy Warhol, we’ve just added a new Warhol “section” to his artist page. This section involves Warhol’s photography.

Andy Warhol was always intent on recording the world around him. In the 1950s, this record consisted of sketches from the sketchbook Warhol was rarely seen without. As early as the 1960s (as well as the 70s and 80s), he began using cameras as a means of capturing his surroundings – first a polaroid camera, and then a treasured 35mm compact Minox.

He called his camera “his date”; it is thought that the camera acted as a tool – it allowed Warhol to engage with the world from behind a barrier, behind a lens.

In addition to capturing Warhol’s daily life (everything from friends to foods, from fashion trends to piles of city trash), the polaroids were used as a part of Warhol’s artistic process. Most often when creating his famed celebrity portraits, Warhol would first take several polaroid photos of the subject before making the move to canvas.

Explore our new Warhol Photography section and return often to see what we’ve added from our photography inventory.

RCBC Alum Created TIME Magazine Cover Reimagining Rosa Parks

In January 2020, Lavett Ballard was approached by D.W. Pine (creative director of TIME Magazine), who was selecting covers for TIME's 100 Women of the Year. Each cover featured a representative woman/group from the last 100 years, and Pine hoped to utilize Ballard's depiction of Rosa Parks. The artist shared: "I used Rosa as the centerpiece because she was the one who was able to bring the movement to fruition. I also used images of the buses, of people standing outside waiting, of people walking, and yellow roses to represent freedom.”

Lavett Ballard in Daily Art Magazine

Maïa Heguiaphal at Daily Art Magazine recently covered Lavett Ballard and her stunning artwork. According to the author, “[t]he choice of a fence as a canvas is quite significant. Usually, we use fences to keep people from each other or to lock them up. Here, [Lavett Ballard] exploits those common meanings and exceeds them to use the fences as expressive supports."

Be sure to read the full article, and check out Lavett’s solo exhibit in Long-Sharp Gallery | Virtual.
