Dogon

Dogon is a study of a classic Yoruba statue. The original purpose of the object was a stool. Yoruba craftsmen and artisans carve the pieces from a single block of wood.

Martins illustrates the object in this painting with the same essence and motions of a sculptor, using a single stroke to identify one or more surfaces or dimensions. The work features the exaggerated, emphasized brushstrokes characteristic of Martins’s distinct abstract expressionist and narrative style.
