Tarik Currimbhoy | Designing the Doris Duke Award

In 2023, Tarik Currimbhoy was commissioned to produce the Doris Duke Award’s first-ever statuette. This custom piece, presented to both past and present award recipients, reflects the program’s commitment to honoring artists not only through financial support, but with a symbol of enduring artistic achievement and recognition.

The Doris Duke Artist Award honors outstanding performers in contemporary dance, jazz, and theater, celebrating their creativity and impact on society. Established by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, this award provides up to $525,000 in flexible funding over seven years, along with professional development and peer networking opportunities. It is one of the most significant awards for performing artists in the U.S., empowering recipients to explore their artistry without financial constraints.

“When I get a commission, I look at what’s around me. So I don’t want to create it from thin air - I’d like it to be an answer to a question”

Tarik Currimbhoy | Reflections with Jaswant Lalwani

Reflections is a weekly program on TV Asia USA hosted by Jaswant Lalwani, spotlighting the journeys and philosophies of distinguished South Asian figures in arts, business, and culture. With guests ranging from acclaimed fashion designer Naeem Khan and Met Museum curator Navina Haidar, the show offers unique insights and meaningful visibility within North America’s South Asian diaspora. Now in multiple seasons, Reflections continues to be a trusted platform for thoughtful conversations and cultural storytelling. Following the design of the Doris Duke Award statuette, Currimbhoy sat down to speak with Lalwani.

“But what excited me most of all was the idea of balance, of simplicity, and of movement.”
