Andy Warhol - Volkswagen (From Ads)

Created in 1985, Andy Warhol’s “Ads Suite” is comprised of ten screenprints depicting a broad spectrum of images – Macintosh, Paramount Pictures, Chanel No. 5, and Mobilgas, to name a few. With his portrayal of the Volkswagen, Warhol captured a famous ad from the 1960s reading, “We pluck the lemons; you get the plums.”  The ad was trying to do the impossible – to rehabilitate the image of Volkswagen after Hitler had publicly adopted it as his favorite car. In an effort to revamp this association and make the VW “Lemon” a friendly, approachable car for everyone, the ad was allegedly the first of its kind – it incorporated a car alone, without excess “luxury” features to suggest the high-class lifestyle often alluded to in automobile ads.
