Valentin Popov (Ukrainian, b. 1956)

A Ukrainian-born artist currently living in California, Valentin Popov decided to pursue art at an early age. Born into the family of one of Kiev’s most famous artists, Popov was formally trained at the Kiev State Art Institute (Academy of Fine Art of Ukraine) and at the Kiev State School of Art. Throughout his career, he has worked in a wide range of media and subject matter, combining satire, reality, humor, and parable within his stunning works. In 2003, he shifted away from creating collages that displayed phrases, words, and historical references, which were often seen in his earlier pieces. Instead, he began producing numerous paintings of scenes from Venice and other European cities, often using his own photography for inspiration for the paintings.

Popov is also well known for a series entitled Face: Portraits by Valentin Popov. Inspired by Andy Warhol to create numerous portraits, Popov used consistent formatting for each portrait and managed to capture the personality of each individual within the portraits through his distinctive skilled technique.

Long-Sharp Gallery is pleased to welcome Valentin Popov and present his work within the gallery space. Popov’s incredible works have been featured in private and public displays around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
